Osprey Books, campaign series books #54, Shiloh 1862 the death of innocence. This pamphlet type of book(96 pages) gives you a quick overview of the battle. And it's small enough to carry with you during your tour. One of my favorites is the old pamphlet that the Department of Interior put out way, way back 1955, and mine was reprinted in 1961 . It's one of those little booklets that they put out for every battle. I collect them as I find them. Lots of pictures and maps.

Trailhead Graphics sells a waterproof/tearproof map of the battlefield which shows all the monuments and markers. They'll probably carry them at the NPS store at the battlefield, but you may want to get one ahead of time.

Need to get one in advance. The maps are very detailed so one has to learn how to read it.

Reading it on the battlefield will just boggle.

I just finished Timothy Smith's book---which came out in 2013 or so. It is supposed to have the most info on the 2nd day of the battle. I like the maps. I recommend it.

Blue &Gray magazine has a special issue just on Shiloh which includes a driving tour along with coordinates as to exact location.they have both photos before and today so you can keep your bearings on track.I do believe it would be indispensable for you.you can check them online if it still available and it is much easier to carry in the field then a book.

I have the trailhead map as well and it definitely helped me track down specific monuments I was looking for. Gives an extremely detailed map of the entire park.

I'll look into that, thank you!

I found a link, in case anyone else needs it:

I'm going to Vicksburg as well on my trip, I agree.
I hear that Trailhead is working on a Vicksburg map too. I'm not sure when it will be released.

Also, if you didn't know, the numbers on the trailhead map are sync'd with the numbers on the back of the tablets at Shiloh.

That's a good piece of information. My trip is coming together.

not sure about price, but the trailhead are also available on amazon I believe. At least when I went to Antietam and looked they were on Amazon and at the NPS
