It appears to be complete shell with rifling on the copper, but should it not have exploded into particles????

Have you measured it? Judging from the apparent size in your hand it looks more like it is about 40mm rather than a size used in the civil war.

Edit: If you google "37mm Hotchkiss shell" you will see a lot shells that look very similar, perhaps a version of one of those?

The seller wrote me back and refered me to a site where a guy had a CW Whitworth and was firing it. The shell does look sinilar although the size of the shell seems considerably smaller.

I dont have actual access to it, the seller says its 40 MM.

You, collectively, are probably right. Yet, I am looking at a 3.73 and 3.67 Hotchkiss shells and they look pretty close. Any chance these might be accurate to age???

The math does not work however. Even if the conversion were English radius to metric diameter it is still off by a few MMs.

there are some similarities between this and the shell up for sale. It could have been a shell a blacksmith made in his shop.
