I'm sure most of you are familiar with the famous photo of dead Confederates who were photographed along the Hagerstown Pike at Sharpsburg.

These men were members of Starke's Louisiana Brigade who were made up of the following units.

10th Louisiana Infantry
15th Louisiana Infantry
1st Louisiana (Zouaves) Infantry Battalion
1st Louisiana Volunteer Infantry
2nd Louisiana Infantry
9th Louisiana Infantry

In the photograph there is the body of a Confederate sergeant. So I did some research and narrowed it down to the following men.

Any thoughts on which soldier the unfortunate could be?

George Richardson is, I believe, ancestor of mine — one my great grandmother's parent's siblings. I know there is at least one photo of him a passed down genealogy book, from the Carroll - Jenkins - Perry Family. Scattered around St Landry, Avoyelles, Rapides, and Evangeline parish among others .

If possible please try and find the photos!! This is exciting, we may be close to identification!!!

That means that the blanket soldier was a member of the 9th Louisiana due to the source of the pattern. Pretty neat.

As for the Sergeant I think it's Sergeant Alexander Feuga personally.
Speaking of CS Burials after Antietam and South Mountain...there is a book listing their burial places online

Hope this is helpful

As I pointed out before one dead soldier has a coverlet in the "Pine Cone Bloom" pattern which was extremely common in the Shenandoah valley where the 9th Louisiana Infantry was stationed during the Valley Campaign.

One soldier in another photograph has a coverlet in the "Pine Cone Bloom" pattern.

I did some quick research and found that that specific type of weave was quite popular in the Shenandoah valley. Any idea if General Starke's brigade was stationed in the valley prior to the Maryland Campain?

Taking a look at R. T. Raborn's records it does clearly state he was killed at Sharpsburg. Meaning his body may be one photographed here.

After some careful examination I believe that the Confederate Sergeant is him. I've included a cropped version of the known photo for comparison with the dead man.

That photo is not Raborn. It is the first one I posted

What I had meant to say was that it was these two that looked simular.

Also the Sergeant may have a possible headwound to his left temple.

If Campbell's battery was raking canister down this area it leads me to believe that the hole in his left side was caused by a ball of canister. (Maybe? That side would've been facing the access road when he was hit if my theory is correct.)

Look at the slightly twisted position he's laying in. If it was canister it definitely would've had enough energy behind it to turn him upon impact which made him fall in this position.

No, I just stumbled across the photo on the LOC and thought they looked similar. What do you think about the possibility of the SGT being Raborn?
I believe the possibility is quite high. Though there are other candidates.

This says Louis Aarons was born in Germany and that he was single when he enlisted at Camp Moore, Louisiana in July 1861.
