I'm sure most of you are familiar with the famous photo of dead Confederates who were photographed along the Hagerstown Pike at Sharpsburg.

These men were members of Starke's Louisiana Brigade who were made up of the following units.

10th Louisiana Infantry
15th Louisiana Infantry
1st Louisiana (Zouaves) Infantry Battalion

9th Louisiana Infantry

In the photograph there is the body of a Confederate sergeant. So I did some research and narrowed it down to the following men.

Any thoughts on which soldier the unfortunate could be?

Found it - August 2020 issue of Battlefield Photographer (The Journal of The Center for Civil War Photography).
Thanks! I think I was mistaken as I was thinking of a different photo I came across a while ago. Great find and great read!

One soldier in another photograph has a coverlet in the "Pine Cone Bloom" pattern.

I did some quick research and found that that specific type of weave was quite popular in the Shenandoah valley. Any idea if General Starke's brigade was stationed in the valley prior to the Maryland Campain?

Wow, sharp eye and thanks for researching that little piece of evidence and sharing it.
Cheers!

I think some of the regts were under gen Taylor in Jackson's valley campaign, will try and double check later today

I think if we want a shot at identifying who this unfortunate soldier may be, we would have to reach out to family genealogists. IF the soldier is from the 9th, there is only one sergeant known to have been killed, which is Rueben Tucker Raborn, from Company H. I believe there is a family history somewhere online that I stumbled across a few months ago, if we reach out to them we could be able to find a photograph of Raborn.

Did that include any Louisiana regiments?
In the 1862 Valley campaign, Jackson's command consisted of his own division -- three brigades of Virginians -- and General Ewell's division -- two brigades of Virginians, one brigade of Louisianans, and one brigade of mixed-state troops.

In the post-Peninsula reorganizations, Ewell's division was specifically reorganized: the two brigades of Virginians were consolidated and the Louisiana brigade (Taylor's) was transferred to Jackson's division; their places were taken by two new brigades of North Carolinians and Georgians. After Taylor's promotion, W. E. Starke of the 55th Virginia took command of the brigade.

Some of Starke's Brigade and some of Hays' Brigade.

Ryan

Edit as a follow up:

6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th Louisiana
That means that the blanket soldier was a member of the 9th Louisiana due to the source of the pattern. Pretty neat.

As for the Sergeant I think it's Sergeant Alexander Feuga personally.
