I'm a map junkie and I'm interested in thoughts on the best atlas for the War of N.. I mean, the War Between the States, beg pardon, that would show things at the brigade level. I have the one produced by West Point, which as one might expect is pretty fifth rate and Battle Maps of the Civil War, which excerpts the wonderful old 3D depictions from the old "American Heritage" book.

Savas Beattie's "Maps" series are absolutely amazing for the individual brigade level, and I have all in the series, but is there a good one that shows campaigns/battles at the division level? FWIW, for me the best military atlas ever is "Military Atlas of the Napoleonic Wars," which has first-rate detail down to the division level. Appreciate any recommendations.

Have you had the opportunity to look at The Atlas of the Civil War edited by James McPherson? I'm another map geek and think it's a lovely book, but I'm not sure if it would meet your requirements. I'd check with your library to see if they have or could get you a copy to check out before deciding to buy. Maybe others will have opinions on this book as well.

Welcome from the Shiloh/Pittsburgh Landing Forum and North Mississippi!
Be sure and visit the Forum soon.

American Battfield Trust provides very detailed maps of battles and I would go to their website* for additional information.

For really down in the dirt brigade level maps would be Trailhead Graphics maps but they are down only for a few of the major battles. Go to their website** for additional information.

This site be of assistance but I am not sure.***

If I can be of further assistance just send me a PM

Regards
David

I'm not sure the ESRI site linked above is what @Aelfwin is looking for either, but I would highly recommend that people here take a look at it. It is wonderfully done with a lot of information presented in an engaging manner. ESRI is the developer of a major geographic information systems platform (ArcGIS/ArcInfo/ArcView). In short, their products help people make maps. The purpose of their StoryMaps is to link maps with other sources of information such as articles, pictures and media. The developer for this particular StoryMap is the American Battlefield Trust.

I always also recommend my favorite general reference: Echoes of Glory Illustrated Atlas of the Civil War (Time-Life Books, 1991) for campaign maps that give a good sense of what's happening and major battles with brigade-level placement but also with tables of organization so you know the original division assignments of the brigades.

(Yes Savas Beatie is excellent! I just hope they get around to adding more western theater…)

Paperless Archives has a digital set of the Atlas that is pretty good, and not that hard to use.
