Organized in 1862 in Eastern Tennessee from Southern loyalists, the unit musterd in for the term of three years. Among it's most notable engagements were the Battles of Stones River, Chickamauga, and Nashville. It also participated in the Tullahoma Campaign.

Am I seeing long sword-type bayonets on some of the guns, perhaps these fellas are equipped with 1855 Harper's Ferry two-banders. Yes, No? Cavalry wasn't known for having bayonets given they were typically using carbines, so if not bayonets, what's with the long rifles?

Union troops in Confederate territory. Many times had to "fend for themselves", especially early on.

The Second and Third Tennessee Cavalry had a very interesting history. These men to travel some distance to enlist and over some hard terrene including rivers, steep mountains, and Confederated forces to reach the Union army before the union occupied Knoxville. Big Creek was a major pathway to the Union forces. It is located where US 25W reaches LaFollette, Tn.

I downloaded the picture and then blew it up, there are definitely different types of carbines and long guns, what appears to be bayonets are actually slings on the long guns making it look as if there was a bayonet with a handle. What a nightmare it must have been to supply this unit with ammunition, wonder it they had their own molds? I thought I could identify a Burnside, Maynard and a Smith, but as it was expanded it started to lose resolution. At least two in the ranks also have Cav sabers. The bottle or bugle, is not discernable even blown up, but I can't imagine it being a bottle since this is a fairly serious picture, but who knows.
