Besides visiting the battlefield and interviewing many veterans, Cyclorama artist Paul Philippoteaux also commissioned Gettysburg photographer William Tipton to record 360 degree of panoramas from Hancock Avenue (future) between the Copse of Trees and The Angle. The artist then used these photographs to include very accurate details of the landscape in the painting. In the photos below, I am comparing Tipton's northwestern view with the matching area of the Cyclorama. Tor clarity, I am including a google earth view on which I designated the frame relative to the Copse of Trees and The Angle.
