Just acquired a nice example of the 1861 Savage Navy revolver. The serial number (8 6 3 1) is stamped on the frame under the grip, on the back of the cylinder, and on the frame under the loading lever. No assembly numbers, which I read on College Hill that early production didn't include.
The serial number on the barrel is double stamped - one right below the other. I find this an interesting curiosity. Anyone have any theories or experience as to why this would be?
