Hey, I have read I a couple of places that NCO's could wear a red wool sash, was that for Union NCO's only or Confederate also or was that untrue altogether?

Thanks,

From the 1861 U.S. Army Regulations http://howardlanham.tripod.com/unireg.htm see para 1506 in this quote:

1504. For General Officers-buff, silk net, with silk bullion fringe ends; sash to go twice around the waist, and to tie behind the left hip, pendent part not to extend more than eighteen inches below the tie.

1505. For Officers of the Adjutant-General's, Inspector-General's, Quartermaster's and Subsistence Departments, Corps of Engineers, Topographical Engineers, Ordnance, Artillery, Infantry and the Judge Advocate of the Army- crimson silk net; for Officers of the Medical Department-medium or emerald green silk net, with silk bullion fringe ends; to go around the waist and tie as for General Officers.

1506. For all Sergeant Majors, Quartermaster Sergeants, Ordnance Sergeants, Hospital Stewards, First Sergeants, Principal or Chief Musicians and Chief Buglers-red worsted sash, with worsted bullion fringe ends; to go twice around the waist, and to tie hind the left hip, pendent part not to extend more than eighteen inches below the tie.

1507. The sash will be worn (over the coat) on all occasions of duty of every description, except stable and fatigue. 1508. The sash will be worn by "Officers of the Day" across the body, scarf fashion, from the right shoulder to the left side, instead of around the waist, tying behind the left hip as prescribed.

Since sergeant is ranked below 1st sergeant, no sash for you! I saw a reference indicating that red was applicable to artillery and infantry - cavalry sash would be yellow.

Somehow I doubt the regulation dress uniform meant very much out at the pointy end of things.

From Confederate army regulation:
Sash.

41..For General Officer—buff silk net, with silk bullion fringe ends; sash to go twice round the waist, and to tie behind the left hip; pendant part not to extend more than eighteen inches below the tie.

42..For officers of the General Staff and Engineers, and of the Artillery and Infantry—red silk net. For officers of the Cavalry—yellow silk net. For medical officers_—green silk net. All, with silk bullion fringe ends; to go around the waist, and to tie as for General Officers.

13..For sergeants—of worsted, with worsted bullion fringe ends; red for Artillery and Infantry, and yellow for Cavalry. To go twice round the waist, and to tie as above specified.

All sergeants but corporal could wear sash.

It does come in handy.
When we went to Gettysburg 150th (remember the heat) coats/jackets were optional at most battles. As 1st Sarg of our company the capt. told me if I was coatless I had to wear a sash, so that officers in other companies could ID me. So down to the sutlers I went. I think thats the last time I wore it. Cost 50 bucks, comfort/good health priceless!

I wore one back when I was a 1st Sgt. Of Artillery...for a while. It got in the way of everything, was one more thing to put on in the morning, and served essentially no purpose for an artilleryman, and did little more to denote rank or privilege that the red stripes on the sleeves didn't. So I stopped wearing it.

And to answer the OP's question properly, it was a regulation red worsted wool sash. ^_^
