Same woman ?

I know you must be thrilled to get them. After my cousin's wife passed away, her son found old pictures of our family. He gave them all to me plus documents she had kept on the family farm and other things. They have helped me in my research. I was only one interested in old photos. I found out that other members who had some threw them away. For me they are precious and connect me to my past.

Wonderful thing to have! Just my two cents worth, John - I think they are likely the same person, too. People sometimes look quite different in other postures. I've seen just about every photo of Forrest there is but then I found one of his face sideways, like a mugshot. Had to stare and stare because it did not look anything like him! (Which is why the cops take the side view as well as the front.)

We had some problems once with sisters - there was one photo of granny and one of her sister. Couldn't tell until somebody enlarged the pictures, then we knew for sure. Granny had higher status than her sister and so had the 111 chin tattoo, which we couldn't see until it was enlarged!

What treasures, thanks for sharing them!

Same hair line

Yes, that plus the huge similarity in hair style. We girls dislike change and our ancestors sure did. Even given changing eras, have noticed women tended find one thing and stick to it for awhile.

IMO, same person. Date of first photo is pretty recently before the second shot, with her baby. Hang on- her severe hair cut in both I saw somewhere, where it's cut so short around her ears? Ah ha, can't believe I found it in this mess. An 1898 Godey's ad. I'm not really adding anything new, sorry. Members have already tracked this stuff down, thought I'd add a little.

But who knows how long that was in vogue?

Those puffy sleeves, falling over? Think Lelliot nailed it, with 1896. Seems to be the last year Godey's featured any fashion, too.

High collar and that pin- it's an 1898 image.

Thank you ma'am - those really match and confirm that the first image is of grandma the year she married.

I'm wondering ( without any proof whatsoever ) if women tended to have photos done when they became engaged. I know it was customary when I was kid- remember the newspaper section devoted to engagements? Had forgotten that until this thread. There's a similar ' series ' of photos we have of my grgrandmother, a single portrait where she looks a lot like she does in her wedding photo.

I do think that was the custom in many places as I've seen other examples in photos cousins had of my dad's people.

Wonderful topic, thanks for sharing. Vintage family photos are the greatest!! I think it's the same woman as well. The fashion styles and hair-do's seem to indicate early 1890's to about 1900.

Here are two photos of my grandmother's mother shown in both. "Hattie Sprague" was born in 1860, the photo shown by herself was taken in Chandler's Photo Studio in Bozeman Montana in 1892, the year my grandmother was born. "Hattie" was 32 years of age in this one. She was living on a huge farm outside Bozeman, She and her husband raised five children there before selling the land at a huge profit and returning to Ohio from whence they came. The other photo was taken in Marietta Ohio, although there is no date on it. "Hattie" is shown with her sister "Addie." I can guess the date on this one to be around 1900.

The comparisons are interesting with mine similar to yours. Although I think the two photos you show compared to each other seem to be perhaps a few weeks/ months to maybe a year apart. Hattie and Addie both seem to have ear rings on, Hattie alone looks like her ears are pierced with a pearl in them

Thanks for adding your photos; they're great. I especially like the pose in the one with both women.

My first wife went to school in Bozeman and I worked for a surveying company out of there for a year or so after I graduated college.
