I'm not sure if this topic has been discussed before ( I did search old threads).

But one of the most active paranormal antebellum homes in my state is the Waverly Mansion
in West Point, Mississippi.

Many "spirits" are said to remain.

But through the years, the oldest and most common experiences seems to be an invisible
little girl calling for her mother and jumping into a bed.

One of our local news guys that follow such .... gives another brief description:

I said all of that to say this.

I met some old friends from West Point last weekend.
Their now 16 year old daughter worked in some capacity at this old home last summer.
She's not remotely interested in the unexplained. But, I casually asked if she had any
weird stories.

She laughed and said never !

A few minutes later, she said:
" Come to think of it, a couple of times we thought we heard a young kid shouting "Momma, Momma " in one of the bedrooms ".

I asked no more questions.

If ever on I-24 in Paducah, stop at the Whitehaven rest area. It is the only historic home that has been incorporated into an interstate rest area. Refurbished with period furnishings. Very nice and free admission (last time I was there).

Yes, there is ghostly woman who is said to appear on the second floor balcony.

That is too cool !

Very few rest areas have anything that comes close to that ...

But I can easily see a ghostly woman appearing anywhere at that site.

Love stories and old houses!
I forgot to clarify the strangest part of my conversation.

The 16 year old had grown up with the local ghost story accounts all of her life, but as I mentioned, she laughed and said:
"they were just trying to scare the kids from going out there to party".

She knew nothing of the decades old (almost identical) accounts of a young girl searching for her mother.

But as I said, I didn't ask any more questions.
Without knowing, she had basically reported the same thing that many have been saying for at least 120 plus years.

"Knew every love affair in that part of the country for the past fifty years just by reading the graffiti on the walls..."
Now that's funny!

I'm not sure I've heard of this place, but it sure is impressive. Why is it, just about every old Southern mansion, or plantation house rather, has ghost stories?

I wouldn't doubt some, or even many are true, but I can't help but think folks want those places to be haunted.

Very True ! You are correct about many such old houses.
But quite a few owners also avoid this topic when asked.

At times, some new owners of these old sites ... especially in tourist towns like New Orleans, Savannah or Natchez will take
a grain of truth about a poor soul that passed away in the house and add enough embellishments to have a very profitable
"ghost/vampire tour" within six months of their purchase.

Waverly Mansion is a bit different.

It's relatively unknown outside of the local area. ( In the middle of no-where ... so to speak).
Many outsiders associate the mansion with a local golf course of the same name.

I have no idea if it's haunted or not, but when new generations describe the same experiences ...I start to ask, what's really going on at that place ?
