Does anyone know why the fences along this field are reinforced with barb wire? Apparently, we are not supposed to visit there? Is it private property? I am interested in this field because it is from where Semmes brigade entered the Rose Woods. Any information is appreciated.

I thought of scaling the fence, but I couldn't find any break in the barb wire. Maybe, I will try again the next time that I am there.

Park near the 2nd Delaware monument on Brooke Avenue. When there no leaves, you can see the "Split Rock" from the road (looking west). There is a low fence there that doesn't take much to climb over. That fence is very near the road. Many of the dead soldier photos taken by Alexander Gardner are in that immediate area. That is a must stop for me on every trip.
I have walked into that area from the Rose Farm Lane but it is a much longer walk and the fence is higher as I recall.

Too many people drive past that area and park near the NPS marker that has the photo of the dead soldiers. That marker is north of the split rock. People think the Split Rock is near that photo marker but it is not.

    Hope I helped.

The Rose Farm is a must-see spot of the battlefield which is not part of the official NPS driving tour. If you visit this venue, please take along William Frassanito's book entitled, "Gettysburg : A Journey in Time."

Question : Can I visit the old Rose Farm barn site off the Emmitsburg Road? I realise the access road leads to the private property residence.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Yes, you can see it up close....at least what's left of it. Just drive on up there.

I shot the video below from near the 2nd Delaware marker. About 20 seconds into it, you can see the fence, but I couldn't find a place to scale it. Is that the correct location of Split Rock? Thanks again, for your help.

Your video is just a bit north of the access to the Rose Farm field. Look at my photo below. Look behind the Split Rock and you see the fence change types. Near where the fence type changes is the access point I have used. Many times there is a small confederate flag stuck in the ground near the fence access point. You don't want to pass the 2nd Delaware monument.

In the Stone Sentinel map BuckeyeBill posted, you can also access the Timbers Farm foundation right at the hard right turn where Cross Avenue become Brooke Avenue. That whole area is so cool. Rarely is it crowded.

    Hello all,
I just joined this Forum and see a LOT of VERY interesting discussions - Great and I cannot wait!
Since this thread concerns the Rose Farm and specifically its field - or meadow - I thought I would say 'hello' by posting this photo I took roughly ten years ago from that vantage point looking toward LRT, which I think explains Col. Henry Cabell's comment (Artillery Btn - McLaw's Division) RE: "The guns on the mountain" . . .
Note how Smith's Guns (see the 99th PA Monument?) kind of become part of LRT?
    Enjoy.
    Regards, Bob

This photo remind me of that:

(split stone to the right and the smaller ones up ahead.)

I never had a problem getting there. Usually park at the Devil's den parking lot and go by foot. It gets really muddy if it has rained recently, and the ground is very uneven, other than that...

Here is William Frassanito's graphic (drawing) of the Rose Farm pasture with Confederate dead near the Split Rock and just west of Brooke Avenue.

I've tried to enter that field heading west from Devil's Den, myself, by following the south edge of Rose Woods. The problem is that when you hit the southwest corner of the woods, you can't make a right turn because you run into the reinforced fence. So, you were actually able to get over the fence at that point?

Welcome, Robtl! I, myself am from Delaware County, one over from you. I am thinking that your photo was taken with a zoom lenses? That explains how Houck's Ridge (yes, I see the 99th PA monument, as well as Smith's guns!) seems to blend in with LRT.

If you look at the picture in my original post, the red line marks the fence. I don't see how you can cross the field from Devil's Den, along the southern edge of Rose Woods and not encounter that red line (the fence)?
