Was just coming to post that. This one hits home I took Buds civil war class at virginia tech and he was the keynote speaker when I graduated in December 1995. Learned so much from him

Always had a tale to tell. Surely will be missed. RIP Doctor Bud !

I liked listening to him on documentaries. Not sure why...perhaps because he didn't 'sound' like a stuffy historian. But you could hear his passion and knowledge in his addresses. He was also one of the few good academic writers out there. Certainly will be missed.

His "coaching tree" is pretty impressive if you compile a list of those who at one time or another studied under him.
