I saw this rifle in a shop today and was curious about it. This store does not usually sell antique weapons. The fellow behind the counter new nothing about it except it was there on consignment. $895.00. I took a few photos and hope someone can tell me a little about it. The ram rod did not look original. It was metal and looked about 4 inches to long. I know absolutely nothing about antique weapons, and wondered about the price. High, low, ridiculous? Thanks

I like it! It is an 1839 dated Harpers Ferry-manufactured Model 1835 .69 smooth bore musket altered to percussion some time in the late 1840s or 1850s. The brass was once the pan, which was cut off when the conversion took place. It could well have Civil War provenance, since so many of these converted flintlocks were on hand when the war began. Was it rifled, or is it still a smooth bore?

The cone is a newly manufactured replacement from what I can see in the photo.

I didnt think at the time to look down the barrel. I will stop back in later this week to pick up ammo so I can check then.

Thank you for the information.

To me it seems high - but that's because I bought a similar one at a gun show for around $150-160. But of course that was sometime in the 1970's or early 1980's and I suppose things have changed a bit since then!
They have paved all the roads and built the Interstate since then :D
