I am looking to make a trip to Richmond this summer. Where is the best place to stay to have access to the most Civil War sites? Thank you.

I spent a few days there in December. I stayed west of town, about 15 min away from downtown. It all depends on how much you want to spend for lodging. Hotels downtown are probably going to be more expensive, but closer to where you may want to go. There is no shortage of places to stay though.

My thought was I was going to be driving anyway, so whats another 15 minutes...

If you want to stay in downtown, as far as area goes, I would suggest you stay between Broad and Canal and 95 and Belvidere. There are a whole bunch of hotels from all the big chains at a variety of prices. My favorite place to stay in Richmond is the Linder Row Inn, which is in a city block of antebellum row houses, has a lot of character, and the prices are in the bottom range of the chain hotels (think Holiday Inn Express or Hampton Inn.) The Jefferson Hotel, is probably the nicest place to stay in Richmond, but it is pricey.

Not sure how much you are willing to walk, or if you are taking a car. If you are willing to walk, staying downtown is nice; expect to take a cab to some places, like Bryan Park and Battery park. If you have a car, I would suggest that you stay out of town (Northwest is popular) and drive in. Likely a less expensive proposition, but slightly different experience

Hope you have a great trip.

Thanks guys. I want to spend a s little as possible on lodging, but not stay in a flophouse. :D Someone mentioned the airport area. How far is that form various sites?

About half an hour with car/cab. Close to $50 ride one way. You are better off renting a car (or staying downtown and taking the free hotel bus to/from the airport). Kinda averages out with downtown. Unless you drive to Richmond.

I am going to drive. It's about 7 hours from where I live. I make the 9 hour pilgrimage to Cooperstown, NY every few years.

If you drive, and are price sensitive, I'd suggest you go for lower price after you read reviews in a place like Tripadvisor to make sure that there are not any major issues.

Reds or Indians?

I have only stayed in Richmond once and stayed at the Richmond Omni Hotel. Very nice but not if price is important.

I just stayed the last two nights at the Country Inns and Suite off I-95 (exit 61B) in Chester, Virginia. This hotel spilts Richmond and Petersburg in half. One night costs $95.00. My son and I are currently staying the night at the Holiday Inn Express next to the Pamplin Historical Park : Museum of the Civil War Soldier.
