Richmond carbines

I'm reading the book The Union Cavalry Comes of Age. There is one passage that says during Stuarts grand review at Brandy Station he used the opportunity to complain to Lee about the poor quality of the carbines manufactured in Richmond for the cavalry of Northern Virginia. Does anyone know or have a picture of what these carbines looked like? were they copies of sharps or were they muzzle loaders? thanks

IMHO, he was referring to the Richmond Sharps Carbine.

I think Stuart was talking about this one. not the Sharps. Only about 5,400 were produced in Richmond.

The Tarpley only about 400 were produced.

The Richmond Sharps produced by C. S. Robinson Arms Manufactory. Only about 5,000 were produced.

Actually the Richmond muzzle loading carbine was of quite good quiality being robust and accurate. The Robinson copy of the Sharps was considerably less so.

What would one of these carbines be worth today if you could even find one

The SC Robinson carbine is the gun you are referring to. There is some great info on these in the book "From Under The Eyelids"

As for the value of a Richmond Sharps Carbine, I had one from a private collection offered to me last year for $24,000.
