Let me throw you a curve ball. I don't think it's Fort Donelson, Tennessee nor Fort Donelson, La. I don't put much stock in writing on cdvs unless it's a person's personal signature. In this case, we know the photographers were McPherson & Oliver. If you research them you'll see they were a well known, but short lived team, out of business in 1865. They were enamored of photographing forts, both union and confederate. Of the dozens of cdv photos they produced, most were taken in New Orleans area where they had their studio and up the Mississippi. They took an inordinate amount of photos documenting the seige of Port Hudson including Union camps and Confederate forts and defenses. For my dollar, your cdv shows a fortification at Port Hudson.

Maybe...I dont know...I still think it COULD be Fort Donaldsonville...outside of New Orleans it is a Park now so maybe a local historian will chime in.
Going up to Ft Hudson IS possible but Donaldsonville is a lot closer

Still a cool shot of a Reb Fort

Super...that is what I thought...BUT dumb question...is there a difference between Ft. Butler vs a Reb Fort Donaldsonville? One in the same simply renamed?

For the record, this is the only photo of Fort Donelson in Tennessee that I know of which was taken during the war, although its provenance is a bit of a mystery. Its photographer is unknown and the ID is merely written on the back of the card in pencil. It could be of another area altogether or show a Union position near Fort Donelson.
