I have read the definition of a rebated base of a bullet but like most rifled musket shots during the civil war it went over my head. Can someone explain in simple terms ? Thank you.

In the simplest of terms, the base of the bullet is of a smaller diameter than the rest of the bullet, as in these bullets for a Sharps Rifle.
