Really Cool Image on Ebay

I spotted this image a few minutes ago on Ebay, and thought I would share, as it is quite unique. I think it is a Confederate soldier wearing a U.S. waist belt as a cross-belt. Very neat image!

It looks to me like a marine corps emblem on the buckle, i don't know of they had those or not though so im probably wrong. He doesn't look confederate to me

The belt plate is a "U.S." plate - the image is reversed, and the plate has a gold wash painted over it. Here is a close-up of the plate with the image turned the correct way:

Actually the U.S. Marine Corps emblem wasn't adopted until after the war in 1868. It was however adopted by Commandant Jacob Zeilin who was a veteran of the war and became Commandant of the Marine Corps upon the death of John Harris in 1864. Zeilin had served during the war up to that time at various Marine Barracks, on the South Atlantic Blockade Squadron, and was wounded at First Bull Run.
