He missed the bad winter of '63/'64 at Rock Island, so I wonder why he died?
He was captured in June and died in October so I would rule out any winter sickness and doesn't seem to be the lingering result of a battle injury.
Anything in his records to indicate cause of death?

November 4.— This company was marched from Camp Rodgers
near Lumpkin's Mill near Waterford to Camp Sloan, a distance of
twelve miles.

November 29.— Was marched from Camp Sloan to Camp
Rodgers near Grenada, a distance of seventy miles.
December 27.— It was marched by railroad to Vaughan Station
on the Central Railroad.
Stationed at Snyder's Mill, Mississippi, January-February 1863.
Stationed at Enterprise, Mississippi, June 30-October 31, 1863.
July 4.— This company was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi.
July 8.— Paroled. Furloughed by orders. On the march for
thirty days. Ordered to report, etc.
Stationed at Enterprise, Mississippi, November-December 1863.
Stationed at Dog River Factory, January-February 1864.

Ochiltree, John R. Watson, Joseph G. W. Wood, Maj. Matthew A. Gaston



The regiment was formed in the summer of 1862 and included men from
Rusk, Jefferson, Sulphur Springs and Jacksonville. It was assigned to
O. Young's, Waul brigade, Trans-Mississippi Department. It lost 10
killed, 40 wounded and four missing at Bayou Bourdeau. It was in the
Red River campaign and fought at Jenkins' Ferry, Ark. It moved to
Hemstead, Texas and disbanded in May 1865.
