From what I've researched, I have not been able to find ANY Justice muskets with proof/inspector marks. I found a V over a P with what appears to be an eagle head below it on the barrel near the hammer. What is the "flower" stamp on top of the V? Is this a rejection stamp or an inspectors mark? I know about the problems associated with PS Justice and his contract and am wondering how this rifle may have wound up in SC?
This is a .69 caliber rifled musket with 833 stamped on it. It is a barn find that was next to a Confederate POW camp in South Carolina.
Any thoughts?
