This is a random note, but I ran into this little article just now while researching something else.
Madison Weekly Courier November 16, 1864
A little incident of rebel life occurred at Boonville, Mo., the other day that is worthy of relating. One of the wounded rebel soldiers thought he was about to die; and feeling that he had many sins to answer for, he requested that a minister should be sent to him. The Rev. Mr. H., a rebel parson, was called in. Sitting down beside the wounded man, and assuming all the sacerdotal airs, he gravely said, "My friend, in what state was your mind when you first felt that you would like to be baptized?"
Feebly the man replied, "Ar-kan-saw."
The divine rose from the sick-bed in great indignation and said, "Shucks! That fellow don't know enough to go to heaven!" and left the room.
