I've started work on an animated map focusing on the first five hours or so of the battle. I have special interests here: I discovered that my wife's Great Great Grandfather was with one of Gamble's regiments; and this part of the battle always seemed so mysterious to me -- what were those cavalry guys doing, and how did they pull that off?

This new map is very much like my others, with some new features:
  • based on regiments rather than brigades
  • allows you to use maps other than the Warren map
  • adds a reverse feature, so if something went by too fast, hit rewind!

Disclaimer -- it's only a preview, so some things are missing:
  • any action after the arrival of Wadsworth's division, the timer stops at 1040am
  • skirmish lines are missing, coming soon
  • any units other than Wadsworth and Buford's division on the US side, Archer and Davis' brigades on the CSA side (for example Stone, Biddle, Brockenbrough and Pettigrew's brigades are all missing in this version)

I hope to post an update at least monthly; so on or about the 15th of each month feel free to check for a new version. Here's the link.

Looking good! I have a particular interest in this phase of the battle because my 2nd Mississippi boys played a crucial role as a part of Davis's brigade in opening the battle. Keep up the great work!

Heth wassentto investigate a report of Union cavlry in and around Gettysburg, in lieu of the missing Stuart.

Constrained by Lee's orders not to bring on any general battles, Heth fought cautiously. If it was just cavalry, no problem. If there was Infantry screened by the cavalry, might be a problem. If the cavalry and/or infantry were militia, no big problem; if they were AoP, there wold be a big problem. A lot for Heth to keep in mind as he approached and engaged the unknown cavalry force.
