Preservation help?

I bought dug, relic canteen with a lot of flaking rust. What is a good way stabilize it, both to stop it from rusting more and also to keep the rust flakes from falling off?

I bought dug, relic canteen with a lot of flaking rust. What is a good way stabilize it, both to stop it from rusting more and also to keep the rust flakes from falling off?

I know that some apply a clear varnish, which seals the piece not allowing air & associated moisture to affect it; others will utilize electrolysis, but that will not help with the flakes.

Thanks, I'll try that. It is just a part of a rusty old canteen but I would like to save and display it.
