We reenactors like to pride ourselves on learning the ACW manual of arms and company & battalion drill. But I bet we couldn't hold a candle to those old veterans who had to drill for hours each day, sometimes under threat of punishment!

oh, Iam not criticizing him, just pointing out that as a source for how this was done, the manuals and actual pictures from the war is better.

Actually that's not a bad rendition of Timothy Pickering's manual of arms from earlier. Maybe the paper got it wrong and he served under Andrew Jackson.
