My cousins have done some pretty extensive research of the family. They have traced the maternal, line to a soldier in a PA unit killed at Brandywine and a Virginia Captain - Colonial Army.

The paternal side has been harder. One cousin believes she has the family nailed down to a Confederate who was captured at Vicksburg. He survived the war and had who we believe was my grandfathers dad. His household, postwar, had listed the children only by initials, with the letters and age matching my great grandpa. Should this man be our ancestor, then we have two brothers in the 7th KY Cavalry CSA, and possibly the 6th Virginia Cavalry buried in Scott County, VA and connections to Johnson City, TN. So knowing what State/Rgt he was from and what city would be helpful.

The man who had a child with the right initials and age was J. H. McMaury of Maury, TN. My cousin is certain that is a typo and that his name is listed as Jno McMurray (the actual spelling of the name at the time) and listed as "Confederate captured at Vicksburg, MS July 4, 1863"

I finally have Roll M598 7 titled "Selected Records of the War Department Relating to Confederate Prisoners of War, 1861-1865". My question is this - will the POW records list his regiment and home town or next of kin? Parole information if any?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There were so many surrendered at Vicksburg, The Federals " paroled " a great many if not most of the Confederate garrison. I couldn't find your ancestor among those paroled there. He may have been captured before the garrision's surrender and later exchanged. Can't guarantee this is your Confederate but Carter's 1st TN Cav. was active at Vicksburg and captured July 1863. It's companies were recruited in east Tennessee. I glanced at this soldiers record at fold 3. He was captured again after Vicksburg and died a POW at Camp Douglass, Illinois. Hope I was able to help some way Good luck !

CONFEDERATE TENNESSEE TROOPS

1st Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry (Carter's)

OVERVIEW:1st (Carter's) Cavalry Regiment was organized in November, 1862, using the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry Battalion as its nucleus. The men were from the counties of Rhea, Bradley, McMinn, Roane, Bledsoe, Union, Knox, Jefferson, and Claiborne. Also some of its members were raised behind enemy lines, and a few had served in Thomas' North Carolina Legion. Company C was detached and assigned to A.W. Reynold's Brigade in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. This company was active in the Vicksburg Campaign and was captured in July, 1863. Exchanged, it was attached to Waul's Texas Legion, then returned to the regiment. Company K took part in the Atlanta Campaign, the defense of Savannah, and the campaign of the Carolinas. It surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. The regiment was attached to Wheeler's, Pegram's, J.S. Williams', Giltner's, and Vaughn's Brigade. It participated in Wheeler's raid in Tennessee, fought atMurfreesboro, skirmished in Kentucky and Tennessee, and was active at Cumberland Gap. For a time it served with the Army of Tennessee, then in April, 1864, moved to Virginia with 248 effectives. After fighting at Piedmont, it saw action in various conflicts in the Shenandoah Valley with General Early. During the spring of 1865 the unit disbanded. The field officers were Colonels William Brazelton, Jr., and James E. Carter; Lieutenant Colonel Onslow Bean; and Majors Alexander M. Goforth, John B. King, and Richard S. Van Dyke.

Predecessor unit:
3rd Cavalry Battalion [also called 14th Battalion] was organized in August, 1861, with six companies. Its members were from the counties of McMinn, Rhea, Union, Knox, Hamilton, Bledsoe, and Jefferson. It served in the Department of East Tennessee, skirmished in Kentucky, then saw action at Cumberland Gap. In September the unit had 176 men fit for duty, and during January, 1862, there were 207 present. It merged into Carter's 1st Tennessee Cavalry Regiment in November. The field officers were Colonel William Brazelton, Jr., Lieutenant Colonel James E. Carter, and Majors Onslow Bean and James C. Bradford, Jr.

His home is listed as District 18, Maury, TN in 1870, 46 years of age. With the name J. H. McMaury. My cousin believes the name is wrong and that at some point it was simply taken from the name of Maury County... That may be a leap, but McMaury does have the child with the right initials and age. Our name has been changed much...

"Jno", of the POW files, seems to be the most common abbreviation for John, but also Jonah and some others.

I wish I could add more. I'm only privy to this information as of 3 days ago. I can't add the how/why she got to that point.

I just noticed too that the official record adds the "alternate name" of McMurry - no a, which is how the family spells it today. So there are variations within a single record. We know the "a" was officially dropped when (if it is the right man) the son of J.H. McMaury, known only in the records as A.B. McMuary married his wife who did not like the "a" in (what should be) McMurray and had it spelled without the letter on the marriage cert. Arthur B. McMurray was my great grandpa, his dad was named John.

If POW Jno McMurray died in captivity then we may be off unless he is a brother or close relative.

Say again who you are looking for? Do you have a Regiment or a State? What would be his approx age?

John H. McMaury/McMurry possibly a Tennessee Regiment?

I can tell you that most POW paroles will name the regiment and/or company. The log books for the camps will say where and when captured, sometimes adding if they had any money on deposit or cashed any checks (usually restricted to officers). Also they will say if he died, was in the hospital for some reason, when he was sent up for exchange or released at war's end, and whether he took the oath before Lee's surrender. A parole given at the end of the war or locally if the man was captured near home, will also say where he resided. Some give a physical description.

Well, J. H. McMaury (McMurray) should be John. He had Arthur, my ggreat grandpa. It is fairly certain that they came through TN. We need to confirm the right John McMurry. Not sure of his military service now or town, that would be very helpful. Jno Mc, listed above, did not survive Prisoner camp...

We know Arthur's father was John. Which John Mc is what we need to find.

Thanks for the help and interest thus far.

I'm still not clear. Do you have an approx age? Do you know where he was living in 1860 Census? Even if he wasn't in TN, at least the Census will match his age, birth state, and maybe family so he can be matched with military records. And it may show how his name was spelled at that time.

Carter's Cavalry served with Wheeler while at Dalton. Don't know if that helps, but they saw a lot of action in the skirmishing in the gaps.

I glanced at this soldiers record at fold 3. He was captured again after Vicksburg and died a POW at Camp Douglass, Illinois.

Did your John McMaury survive the war??

I searched the 1860 Census for both Tennessee and Mississippi for McMaury and none were found. Repeated for any McMurry and still nothing.
