At the Museum today and this is obviously a post Civil War cap.

My question is about the small metal piece where the braids cross at the top of the cap.

Were these common on Civil War caps with this kind of braid? Is there a name for these metal 'buttons'?

The " Braid" is called a Quaderfoil first used by the Maríne Corps during the Revolution to mark the members of boarding parties so the Sharpshooters in their own fighting tops wouldn't zero the good guys. It's still worn the Service Uniform frame cover and Dress Blue Cover of Officers both Warrent and Commissioned.

Simply looks like a metal poppy or other flower, which may have been important to the unit.
