I am researching, if it can be called that, my possible GGGrandfather on my mother's side. I have discovered the gentleman's name is Joseph Piner who if I am correct enlisted in the 3rd North Carolina Infantry in company K on May 1, 1862 at Brunswick county and was discharged February 10, 1862.
I found a listing for a film number M230 Roll 31. Can anyone assist? I was interested in his muster information and perhaps the reason for the discharge.

I am at a loss for words to express my appreciation. I thought I would have a relative in service from North Carolina. His being in the 3rd NC meant he was at Gettysburg as well previous engagements.
Thank you so very much

Hi David. Welcome to CivilWarTalk - the best place in the internet for Civil War discussion. Glad you decided to join us and happy to welcome you aboard.

Joseph Piner enlisted in the 3rd North Carolina Infantry in company K
I just took a look at his carded records and it looks like he enlisted into Co K 3d NC on February 1, 1862 at Dogwood Grove, NC "for the war."

His being in the 3rd NC meant he was at Gettysburg
The Company Muster Roll for May 15 - Aug 11, 1863 shows him present, so yes it is probably safe to assume he was at Gettysburg. The 3d NC was George H Steuart's brigade, Ed Johnson's Division, Ewell's Corps. After Gettysburg, he was furloughed home for 20 days --Aug 11 - 31, 1863

On November 27, 1863, Joseph Piner was taken prisoner at Payne's Farm (Mine Run) and sent to Old Capital Prison Washington DC. On Feb 3, 1864, he was transferred to Point Lookout Prison in Maryland and imprisoned there until Sept 18, 1864, when he was paroled and sent to Aikens Landing, Va. for exchange.

lelliott19 Thank you so much for the information regarding my ancestor. I will certainly study up on his unit and where and when they fought.
How ironic that both of my GGGrandfathers were captured. My GGG on my father's with the 29th Virginia captured April 1, 1865 at Dinwiddie Court House was sent to Harts Island and died there in May 1865.
Since Elliott was sent to Point Lookout Prison in Maryland and imprisoned there until Sept 18, 1864, when he was paroled and sent to Aikens Landing, Va. for exchange is there any way to follow up on him from there? I suppose the 1870 census would be a good place to start.

David

3rd NC is a favorite subject of mine.

'Baptism of Fire' was at Mechanicsville in 1862. Also were in the fighting at Gaines Mill and Malvern Hill during the Seven Days.

The regiment was brutalized by the Yankees in The Cornfield at Antietam.

Were in the thick of it at Chancellorsville. Heavy casualties as a result.

Extremely heavy losses on the slopes of Culp's Hill July 2-3, 1863 Gettysburg.

Virtually wiped out at at the 'Mule Shoe' Spotsylvania May 12, 1864

Valley Campaign with Jubal Early in second half of '64.

Only about 50 members left at the Appomatox surrender.

Bruce thank you so very much. I look forward to hearing more from you about the 3rd NC

David

Hey David,

This is the Battle Unit Details summary of the 3rd NC Infantry from the National Park Service. It's odd that it doesn't mention the fight the Mule Shoe, where most of the unit was captured, wounded, or killed.

3rd Regiment, North Carolina Infantry
OVERVIEW:
3rd Infantry Regiment State Troops completed its organization at Garysburg, North Carolina, in May, 1861. The men were from Wilmington and the counties of Green, Duplin, Cumberland, Onslow, Bladen, New Hanover, and Beaufort. During July part of the regiment moved to Richmond, Virginia, then was joined by the remaining companies some weeks later. After serving in the Department of Northern Virginia and the Department of North Carolina, it was attached to General Ripley's, Colston's, Steuart's, and Cox's Brigade. The 3rd fought on many battlefields of the army from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, marched with Early to the Shenandoah Valley, and saw action around Appomattox. It reported 46 casualties at Beaver Dam Creek, 80 at Malvern Hill, 253 at Sharpsburg, 3 at Fredericksburg, and 179 at Chancellorsville. The unit lost 4 killed and 10 wounded at Second Winchester, forty percent of the 548 engaged at Gettysburg, and 7 killed and 65 wounded during the Mine Run Campaign. It surrendered with 4 officers and 53 men in April, 1865. The field officers were Colonels William L. DeRosset, Gaston Meares, and Stephen D. Thruston; Lieutenant Colonels Robert H. Cowan, William M. Parsley, and Edward Savage; and Major William T. Ennett.

Hello Cousins,
I am a descendent of Joseph Piner's brothers William David Piner and Robert Henry Piner and of course their Father John Piner of the Hooly Ridge Volunteers - NC 3rd Co, K . From my genealogy research we may be discussing same family

We definitely are - Are you a direct Male descendent of Joseph Piner with surname Piner? Or do you know one? Our's have daughtered out in NC and we want to DNA a Piner male of this line to prove the line back before Joseph's father John. We've been combing eastern NC. I need to compare the New Hanover (now Pender County) line to Carteret County, NC Piner's. Theory is they all came from Currituck County line 1700-1800 and name could be Poyner/Poiner in wills, land records etc. Let's connect via email - [email protected]
