Last night on the Travel Channels' show, "Food Paradise--Pork Paradise", they highlighted several pork eateries across the U.S. These restaurants are rated the best in serving pork on their menu.

Three of them are:

The Smithfield Inn in Smithfield, Virginia, The Ox Yoke Inn in Amana, Iowa and Nick's Kitchen in Huntington, Indiana.

The Smithfield Inn was started in 1752. It was a tavern and Inn for travelers. One of its earliest patrons was George Washington. They are known for serving the famous Smithfield Ham. Some say this is the best country ham in America..

Two of their famous dishes highlighted in the program were Pork and Apples and Honey Thyme Glaze Pork Chops.

The Ox Yoke Inn was started in 1940. The specialties highlighted by the program were Honey Apple Pork Loin, Jager Schnitzel which is tender boneless pork loin cutlet served with mushroom gravy, and Kesseler Peppeher which is smoked pork chop served with applesauce.

Nick's Kitchen was started in 1908 by Nick Freienstein in Huntington, Indiana. It is home of the famous pork tenderloin sandwich. This is a sandwich made of a breaded pork loin and deep fried. It is a traditional sandwich in Indiana and the Midwest.

The show visited these restaurants, gave their history and showed the chefs making these pork dishes. There were comments from patrons who had nothing but praise for these dishes.

I would state that these are some restaurants to visit if you are near where they are or traveling in the area.

Like the Jager Schnitzel we like to have Holstein Schnitzel which is a bread pork cutlet served with a brown gravy and a fried egg on top.

Ah, yes the good ol' Holstein version of the breaded Schnitzel cutlets. You can also get it with breaded veal cutlet. You don't see the Holstein style much anymore except in true German eateries.

Too many things to watch on TV last night! I really should get DVR! I was busy watching Mercy Street and then Victoria, both season finales, too! I had no idea the Smithfield hams I see in the store were in any way related to the Smithfield Inn! So interesting and to think they've been making hams that long - goodness! Thanks for sharing the information about the show, will have to go back and check it out. Apparently it airs again on Monday, April 10 at 4 pm. http://www.travelchannel.com/shows/food-paradise/episodes/pork-paradise
