Find a Grave memorial for Denis Doeld died 1864. Buried at Camp Lawton Civil War Prison, Millen, Jenkins County, Georgia, United States of America, North America
Yes. All of the citations saying he died at Camp Lawton are from the same source so the error has been multiplied over numerous sites. I'm trying to figure out their identity.
Fold3 has him listed as Dennis Doeld. Four sources from Ancestry.com are listed with a different spelling for each - Dennis Dreld, Dennis Doeld, Denis Doeld and Denis Dreld, respectively.
Which is the same unit that Denis Doeld appeared in on the printed list I found on Ancestry. Did you compare all the members of the hand written list that belonged to co. A, 11th US Infantry with all the members of the printed list from Ancestry to see if the hand written name in question existed on the hand written list separate from Doeld on the printed list? If every name is accounted for except Doeld and the name in question, the logical conclusion is that Doeld corresponds to the name in question.

There are only 4 members from Co A 11 US Infantry included in the Millen POW database (out of almost 4,000 names) and only Doeld is listed as having died at Millen. Believe me, I have gone over this listed hundreds of times over the past decade. I have tried every permutation of the name possible. I have searched multiple databases including ones that allow partial name searches. I have searched the 11th roster. That is why I posted the question here. I'm beginning to believe that the unit is wrong and, possibly, that his name is De Xxld - often the "e" wasn't included when writing names. William DeRossett of the 7th KY cavalry is a good example of this. And then there's also the very real possibility that his name is spelled entirely wrong. There was a Pake Hardee of the 13th Massachusetts listed in the Andersonville Departure records. I couldn't find him anywhere and I went through the entire 13th roster. By accident, I came across his name listed in the 15th Massachusetts (sometimes handwritten 3s and 5s look alike). His correct name is Patrick Harty. I'll keep on looking for Doeld. Thanks for your suggestions.
That's a possibility. I will check it out. There is also the possibility that it's De?uld. Dropping the "e" from names beginning with "De" is a fairly common occurrence. I contacted the expert on a Kentucky cavalry unit with the name Wm D Russett and they responded there was no one by that name in the unit. While checking the roster I came across Wm Derossett. Everything matched and I confirmed that he was not just in the unit but that he had been captured and sent to Andersonville. Thanks for the suggestion.
