Please help identify this cannon

Let me correct myself I'm not 100% positive this is a cannon. Picked it up today and after light cleaning letters came up on the side of it. Not sure what is it, all opinions much appreciated. thank you

Both plates stamped on the right side:

July 4 1895

I'm almost certain that this is a signal cannon… it's "LYNN", not "LYLE" on the markings there, and the July 4, 1896 would have been the 120th anniversary of the United States and also coincided with the World's Fair in Chicago… all the more reason to buy oneself a new signal cannon. The markings indicate it's 1 pdr caliber…
