Planning a Gettysburg Trip

I am planning a trip to Gettysburg. It will be my fiancé and I. She supports my obsession with the civil war and is excited! We are from MS so of course we don't mind warm weather but we are wondering when is the best time to go? We want to stay close so where is the best places to stay? What are must do's and dont's? Any input is welcome!

FYI there is a shuttle service from the transit centre behind the Gettysburg hotel to the museum. It was extremely useful as I didn't have a car. It's really beautiful town despite being a massive tourist destination.

Hire a licensed guide!!!!!!
The battlefield is massive and confusing as the three days occurred on the same ground.
Make plans that she will also enjoy.
