Often credited as the westernmost battle of the civil war, the actual engagement only involved 22 people; 10 confederate insurgents and 12 California cavalry troopers. The precise location of the fight is now covered by I-10, but commemorated with an interpretive trail overlooking the site in Picacho Peak State Park, AZ. Although not a large battle, the encounter resulted in John Baylor withdrawing his confederates from Tucson and cutting off the confederacy from the west.
