What an awesome collection, thanks very much for sharing it! Haven't run into a few of those either.

Wouldn't you love to be able to match some of the individual photos we have to those tents?

I love the picture of those sea coast mortars. If I remember correctly those are the mortars that shelled Fort Sumpter, and started the war!

The variety of tent set ups for photographers in their field is fascinating as well.

I wonder if "H. Goldsticker, photographer, Army of the Cumberland" ever managed to take a photograph of himself or one of his portable studios. My avatar, taken by Goldsticker, was one of several inquiries during an episode of live broadcasts by the Military Images Magazine, hosted by Ron Coddington. It's a really neat program, on Facebook every other Monday evening. The quarterly magazine publication is outstanding. I had asked Ron what he could tell me about Goldsticker and regretfully said that not really much is known about him beyond some basic biographical facts and exactly how many of his images still remain is not known.

Interesting that most of the galleries/studios seem to have some sort of "skylight" arrangement, even in tents -- a practical partial solution to lighting needs:
View attachment 329695 It's a good bet that most of those were facing south.
Note that even this modern photographer has a skylight in the top of his tent; it can be seen just above the backdrop,
although it's closed in my photo, taken at the 150th Shiloh in 2012.

That's an awesome photo, thank you! Whoa. The entire image looks like it's colorized and from the era, doesn't it?

Seriously wish reenacting would be left alone. Where on earth can you see this- living history- elsewhere?
