Can anyone tell me who this Union Major General is and what the insignia is on his cap? I cannot read his name on the bottom of the photo. I have been tasked with restoring it and researching his background! Thanks so much! :smile coffee:

It's Samuel Sprigg Carroll Of Maryland. You can see the same picture on his Wikipedia page

Carroll cdv reveals his missing left arm which was amputed from injuries he received in the Battles of Wilderness and Spotsylvania in 1864.

I am not usually a fan of colorized photos, but I do think that the work you did here is very nice. It keeps things soft, while recreating the uniform, and a natural skin tone.

Very nice indeed.
 
It sounds odd to say it, but the change in color of the signature makes it seem more real.

How many of these cards do you think he handed out?
