Interesting, I think the bottom one is him because LoC identifies him in this photo in a camp in DC and it looks more like him:

Ah, I see now. Google image search says top man could be Colonel George Pratt, but I don't think they really look the same.

Interesting......I did a Google image search and the top one was ID'd as Nugent while the second one was variously ID'd as Denis F. Burke of the 88th NY or James A. Mulligan of the 23rd IL.

Me too - the hairline's don't match at all.

Neither do the ears, eyebrows, distance between the eyes, and shoulderboards.

Thanks for the input. It seems we agree he is not Burke, Mulligan, Nugent or Pratt.

Not sure about the major in the picture, but that table and chair are in dozens of era pictures, including this of James Garfield and this of John McClernand. Matter of fact, three of the pictures you posted in this post, come from the same room.

No. We believe he is Nugent. The first guy in the OP is IDed as Nugent but he doesn't look at all like him.

The first guy in the OP has an unusual ear that is a. attached on the lob and b. pointy and smallish on top. If you see it again in another picture might be the key to identification.
