Phillipsburg, Thomas, Bridge and Memorial

Today I took my kids to "A Day Out with Thomas" in Phillipsburg, NJ

Not quite Civil War related of course. But I tend to imbue history into my trips, so you'll see where I am going with this. After which I went to see the Northhampton Bridge because I had read about the gilt markers for NJ/PA and also wanted to take a picture of where the Lehigh meets the Delare.

Beats the typicaly 'Welcome to Pennsylvania sign, no?"

And of course, its NJ cousin on the other side of the river.

Of course that brings me to the memorial and being from NJ, I always tend to scrutinize NJ memorials more carefully.

Note the inclusion of McClellan (he did have popularity with the soldiers of course and he did become governor of NJ after the war)

The other two sides of the base are reserved for commanders of NJ units:

Mott
Kearney
Kilpatrick

Torbert
Heckman
McAllister

With respect to the first side, there's no Sherman, no Meade.....

With the NJ characters, its difficult not to note the inclusion of Kilpatrick.....of the six names, I only recognized Kearney and Kilpatrick off the top of my head, but there were many names that in theory could have been placed there that would have made perfect sense.

I didn't want to lose the post so I saved it, one final picture:

Used in the Siege of Vicksburg, looking down the order of battle for the Union during that siege, I'm not seeing any New Jersey unit, if I'm wrong, please let me know, but by 1906 I suppose connecting the memorial with the specifics gave way to the convenience of utilizing whatever surplus was on hand to display. These mortars were available I suppose, they were fairly big, fairly impressive and they had four of them, so stick them there!
