If planning on a trip to Petersburg call ahead to check status. There is a large sinkhole on the Eastern Front tour road that has the tour road closed to cars. You are allowed to walk it or ride a bike. Tour stops 1 & 8 are available. Tour stop 8 (The Crater) you must park at a 7-11 on Crater Road and walk to it from there if you don't want to walk or bike from the visitors center. There is supposed to be a back way to Fort Stedman but I couldn't find it and the neighborhood it is supposedly in wasn't one I would want to leave my car unattended. Also be advised that at Fort Gregg a tree at the fort was trimmed. I am guessing there was storm damage that made it dangerous. However they thought it was a good idea to leave the wood from the tree completely covering the walking trail. That's the bad, the good is the tour road being closed gave me a chance to see everything I had wanted to see in and around Petersburg and a couple of other spots as well. When one door closes another opens as they say. The Blanford Church was one of those spots (right up the street from the Crater and the 7-11). Tour stop 3 at Eastern Front is popular but considering a similar display was at Pamplin I think I managed to get by.
