How many of you Western Theatre folks are going to Perryville this year, Oct. 7-9, 2016?
This is a max event for most of us here in the West, just curious....

My unit, based in western Pennsylvania, has discussed going down with another Federal unit. I am not into big events or actual battle reenactments, but I love Perryville so much I might make an exception to that.

I hope you do! Perryville is one of my favorite battlefields, and the State of Kentucky has been so generous and accommodating to all of us for so many years in allowing the re-enactment to take place on the actual field. The last big event there was 2007, and the unit I am with (42nd Indiana) was able to be portrayed on one day of the event as the main scenario, where they were caught by an Alabama regiment while obtaining water at Doctor's Creek. We were allowed to carry the colors of the 42nd during the battle, and I had the honor of carrying the state colors. I was informed that was the first time those colors had been on the field since the actual battle, 145 years prior. That was REALLY a special day.

I can get to Gettysburg and Antietam pretty easy for a weekend, but Perryville is really special. I visisted last year about a week before the annual reenactment. The staff could not have been nicer. The orientation film is first rate. Museum collection has some cool stuff. I made the Friends of Perryville my Amazon smile charity so they can buy more land and build more rail fences.

1st Ohio Statehouse light Artillery Battery A will be there with at least one of the Ohio Statehouse guns.

I'm looking forward to this one. I'm researching the history of the guns for a book. They were a part of a purchase of 4 batteries of artillery, and there is a very good chance that the 6-pdr in the museum at Perryville is one of the guns I'm researching. If it is, it will bring the number of surviving guns to 12 out of 24.

Side Notes.... even though this event is being held in the "1861" 155th anniversary cycle year... It will be the "Big one" planned for Perryville. Habitually in the past it had to compete with a variety of other 1862 era events both Western and Eastern Theater clustered together which usually quite thinned the available resources overall... Solution was to hold it a year earlier... so that more folks would be able to participate... Otherwise in the East this year the only major 1861 era event is the 155th First Manassas (held at Cedar Creek)... Folks regrouping after the vacuum of the 150th cycle getting back into it again... seeking worthy events to go too.... Granted tons of small scale events and local Living History programs abound to take up some of the slack... But for those desiring for a good larger scale event for the year... This will be it... Many from the East are planning to make the trip for it... This one should be good....

Perryville 2016 is attracting a lot of attention and I am glad units like the 21st Wisconsin are going to be part of it.

The Red River Battalion, including the Alamo Rifles from the San Antonio region, will be there. It'll be our third trip to Perryville. It's too beautiful a site and too well run a reenactment not to go back, even if it's about a 20 hour drive from Central Texas.

I just a message from one of the Perryville event reenactor bosses that right at 2,000 infantry-1,100 Rebs and 900 Yanks, have registered along with 27 total cannons and several horse-drawn limbers and about 100 Reb cavalry. Gonna be a good one. We should fill, but not overcrowd the park's battlefields. Our Confederate outfit is camping in the woods without A-frame tents. Just dogtents and canvas shebangs. Hope the fall thunderstorms pass us by.
