Period Farb

One of my favorites (via The Daguerreian Society). Unidentified, unfortunately. The act of tucking one's shirt collar down and in like this is something that pops up a bit in old photos but I don't think would fly by most mainstream reenactor standards.

Ah yes, the various Corsican/Sardinian hats. Very different. Not your typical Tunisian/Zouave chechia hat or hat and turban!
Doubtless his unusual knife grip would be thought farbish as well?

This youth looks a bit like your posted man @JPK Huson 1863? Similar tricorn hat---Mississippi? Plus the bag-like, snood-like Corsican-Sardinian fisherman's cap underneath, the battle shirt, and in this case, a toorie or pom-pom or cockade?

Apologies to derail the thread from authentic period "farb!" Here's still another, likely of the same tricorn+corsican/sardinian headwear outfit... I mean how many wore that combination, eh?

Here's a period farb, I think... I guess this guy never got the memo about the British snake-buckle being a Napoleonic-era item, with some possible use in, say, the War of 1812? Also--The shoes?

So that was a ' thing '? For some reason the ' style ' ( sorry, I'm a girl and don't know how else to say that ) seems a little like Zouave ( again, sorry ) style? I'm not even good enough with uniforms to know what would be farb today.

My proposed definition of period farb...

Period Farb: Clothing, equipment, or going's on which would elicit laughter and criticism for historical inaccuracy at a present day reenactment, yet somehow unaccountably is something there is documented proof of someone actually doing, using, or wearing during the Civil War. Historically documented anachronistic goofiness.

In the actual photographic record of officers and men, there are frequently cases of relatives, siblings/brothers, or just close friends holding hands, or draping an arm--or leg!--over each other... In spite of this being completely common in period photographs, one will never see a modern day living historian adopting such a pose or posture or demonstrative display.
