The girl he left behind....
Ahh...I thought maybe he was kneeling at her grave after she had been killed by those terrible bummers who followed after Sherman's army and burned and pillaged and plundered what had not already been destroyed. She died while dragging her grandfather's sword down the sweeping majestic staircase, dressed only in her chemise, trying to defend her sister-in-law from a scurrilous blackguard was attempting to steal her dead mother's gold thimble, but the sister-in-law had already shot the vagabond and Mary Beth had to take off her chemise to wrap around the head of the dead soldier so no one would know he had died and ... oh wait! I think i read that somewhere....?
I guess he just really missed her.

Still, a beautiful and sad photo.
