That's ok! The really outlandish, splendid hats were post-war. Have to say it's a popular topic here, seem to remember a few threads just on ' hats '. The best are all later- but not hugely, always. Fashion took a pretty opulent swing, by the 1870's, towards frills, bows, flounces, ruffles on ruffles and general fluff. Run out of room, sticking decorative touches on dresses? Put it all on your head!

I love these hats... grew up with hats and gloves being a necessary accessory, or a lady was not properly dressed. I wore the pillbox hat along with First Lady Jackie, could not pass by the hat counter of a department store (in Birmingham, this would be Pizitz) without trying one on!
I wish those were still in fashion, gloves, too. Both cover well, those flaws of aging. To get by, I wear my CW era attire whenever possible at speaking/book signing events, though I clearly need to add more lace, ribbons and flowers to my bonnet... and maybe a bird or two!

My mother sometimes made my Easter dress, but she loved pink and ruffles and had this tomboy daughter who could manage to get mustard or splash puddle water or grass stains on any Easter dress. She did make one lovely coat dress that I adored as a teenager. She also adored floral patterns and I almost always wear solid colors, but this coat was a solid and the dress was floral and it was blue! I was happy.

There are lots of the young women's diaries where they mourn the fact that they don't have new bonnets. I imagine that for the girls of the South, it was tough not even much having new ribbons and flowers for Easter bonnets.

The Kentucky Derby is just over a month away and while they may not technically be "Easter" bonnets, the very finest, fanciest and brightest bonnets and hats will surely be standard attire. Horses, the best of fancy dresses and hats,mint juleps, plenty of festivities, not to mention "Thunder Over Louisville" the largest fireworks production in the country. Highly recommended!!!

A guess? Because the name seems to have been used in these romantic tales, with the usual, impossibly lovely heroine, young women picked it up as a name for their daughters. Bet you'll find more! You know, it's odd, how names go in and out of favor through generations? ' Edith ', for instance, was once the ' IT ' name, now we rarely see it. Yours sure seems to have weathered time gracefully.

I've seen it on a few people close to my age, which makes me wonder what made it fashionable in the late 70's. I'm not much for fancy which I think the simple name fits. I love the name Abigail. I like older names.

Even though my daughter and I will be watching services online tomorrow, we are going to get up and get dressed. It is all too easy to sit at home and stay in your pjs. I am going to wear one of my hats too!

Before Easter Bonnets went completely and delightfully off the rails, with those outrageous confections we see a few decades post war they were warming up. The thing is, we wore them anyway, most of the time, and always to church!

Some were advertised but you just never actually see on anyone in photographs- there'd be a reason for that.

" The Cleopatra ". I don't think it caught on.

I think I miss hats. Baseball caps don't count.

Little girls and straw hats. I made my daughter's every year for Easter until she said MOM. I'm in high school. Stop.

Bet this little girl said the same thing.

I got up and got into my Easter outfit today. Watched services..got my kitchen cleaned up from last night. Now I need to get out the ham!
