Ode To Hats! An Easter Thread

View attachment 132061
Dad, a Lutheran minister ( and yes, that is his watch fob ) and my son, seersucker short suit, bucks and bow tie, Easter morning. Son now 35. Dad isn't here any more; but yes, we dressed for church. To this day, if I went in blue jeans there would be a pillar of salt somewhere up here in Yankeedom, with only my purse by way of identification.
what a wonderful picture. Two handsome guys! This is one of my favorites. Mama put this snapshot in a little round silver frame and it hung on a nail by her bed so she must have liked it too.
One Easter Sunday when we were about 5 or so, all in white. Wish we could recapture that moment--I am hopeful!

Oh goodness. it's just generational, that's all. If I had not been born a PK I'd be wearing jeans, too. My generation and a deceased, Lutheran minister father we're convinced is looking over our shoulder? No one wants that kind of trouble. :giggle: I'm sure you look just terrific exactly the way you are.

When I was a little girl it was considered normal for ladies to wear hats most Sundays. You still see a few. The Easter hat must be so very traditional, it's continued.

I was looking at old pictures of me and my sisters as kids this weekend. And one of them was us at Easter with our little dresses, I think it was 1969...so cute :) How time flies :) But being informal today, I rather be comfortable and I think next time I will still wear the jeans and find a really cool Easter Bonnet :0

I've never worn a hat in this lovely, celebratory manner.

I've worn a baseball cap when out walking to keep the sun off my face, but I have never dressed up and worn a hat. And we kinda dressed up for Easter, but not really. Not compared to some of you.

Wonderful photos, by the way. :)

Ah! Smitten! Photos are so plentiful now. It's nice, I suppose. Still. You become almost immune to the charm, scrolling through so many. Tough to make a personal shrine from a digital image, too- which our nail-by-the-bed photographs always are. She was just lovely, Robert although no one has to tell you that.

Goodness, why not? For all the conjecture it's all just talk. Maybe the real H*** is being denied one's chance to go back there, Heaven consisting of heading off, where one most wishes to be. We have yet to hear from someone reporting back, stating otherwise.

Ha! Perfect! ' East meets West ' as it were. Best of both worlds! Traditions begin somewhere- in a few decades someone will be saying " Remember jeans and hats, for Easter? " :) AND the photo of you will show you smiling, not having spent the morning fighting with pantyhose. :D

Oh man, pantyhose! So glad we have a choice about those now.

Sure, you can see the dog-induced bruise on my leg more easily. And yeah, the baby oil I use on my legs means I have to be careful where I sit, lest I slide right off. But at least I don't have to do the Dance of the Water Buffalo getting into those darn hose!

LOL....Yuck pantyhose, I never wear them any longer. I will wear tights in the winter, but pantyhose a woman's worse nightmare....snagging, tears, the rip once you put them on that runs from your toes to to top of your knee :)

Guess who was just on Amazon shopping for her spiffy new Easter bonnet?
Baby girl gets one too!
I found this thread and maybe when they come in I'll post a pic! They are much simpler than what these ladies used to wear!
What is so nice is that once Easter is over and done, we will have new hats for UDC luncheons!
It's a win win!

If you post, I will- not of me but always, always made an Easter bonnet for my daughter. Can you believe it, she stopped letting me inflict them on her as a teen? *sigh* Been itching to get my hands on a little girl's Easter hat for 10 years..... .

We did it to little boys, too, poor things.

From the days when boy babies were not safe from dresses- have not been able to figure out if this worried infant is a girl or boy? That cavalier's feather and lack of general frills could indicate a mother lost her mind, a little. I did, every year, no judgments here!

Love this collection- green hat was probably poisoned, good thing it was only an illustration. AND bottom right, seems to be the beginning of deceased animals on ladies hats?

I was a girl being raised by a single father in the 80's. There is one Easter photo with me in Red & White striped footy pajamas with elves holding my Easter basket, another Easter photo where I am wearing what is clearly a Christmas dress. Red velvet, long sleeved, white lace trim, white tights, white mary janes. The funny ending to all this is my Father looks like the German Santa Clause and my actual name is Shantel Christmas(the last name a gift from my ex-husband). I use the other for re-enacting because I can't find any use of my first name prior to the 60's and the last is just too much. My father bless him tried. Eventually my Grandfather and Uncle moved in with us. Needless to say I am absolutely horrible with hair and girly things.

That is one of the dearest ' Dad ' stories I ever heard! What a peach, knowing little girls need their Easter finery and clueless how to go about it, did it anyway?

Oh heck, better to have a Dad like that and maybe miss a frill or so as an adult. Besides, my memories of having one's hair dealt with includes pony tails pulled so tightly your eyes watered. You didn't miss much!

Is Shantel perhaps a foreign name you could find in use in the era, across The Pond? I'm sorry, as terrible as it may be for use in reenacting, you do have the most enviable name, ever!

I find the hats from the 1800's fascinating and beautiful. So much creativity goes into making them. And what's Easter without a bonnet...

Love the pics!

What I want to know is how on earth milliners did all that without copious use of a glue gun? They were just charming. Wish they'd make a come back- especially for little girls.

I love little boys in hats!
:giggle:

Found this of myself while being nostalgic this morning! Oh my!

My daughter will have my head- so shhhhh. You can't see the hat but this is from a year when my mother made her dress. She's 26 now, our science geek. She says that, no slur on science!
