Odd sleeve patch

In the Collection of Tony Marion there is a tennessee Cavalryman with odd sleeve parches. I would take it theses were not common.

I have never heard of him. The image was printed in the 1970s in a Civil War Times Illustrated.

I have seen these before and they were somewhat identified. It was a long time ago.

I see this image many years ago, I always thought it was used to indicate a particular service or function such as a farrier

Nice set of Colts and the Eagles head sword is defiantly pre CW.

I think it was a farrier if I recall. I do remember it being stated that the patch described a function in the cavalry. It was a long time ago that I saw this.
