I'm searching for a recipe that uses whole wheat flour and old fashioned whole oats, not the instant or quick type. And maybe some raisins thrown in and some chopped up walnuts. Was there such a thing back in the 1860's??? Additionally, was there "self rising" flour back then or was it what we now call "all purpose" flour? Thanks to all of you culinary masters that reply!!

Our Walmart grocery has lard and buttermilk. We get it there.
I've searched for both at my local Walmart (it's one of the real big ones /seperate outside section for gardening/landscaping). Where do they keep the lard at your Walmart?? on a shelf next to the Crisco??? I would like to have some lard, it's also great mixing it up with beeswax melted down 50/50 for minie ball lube.

I put oatmeal right up there with coconut and peanut butter. Almost everything is made better with them added in. Puts me in mind to stir up a batch of no-bake chocolate-oatmeal-peanut butter-coconut cookies.

They keep it next to the Crisco. You could use Crisco.

The Walmart we go to is new grocery/pharmacy store. It has lots of food items I haven't found at the big one near us.
Yeah this one I go to has a pharmacy also. Lard is my preference. Crisco's recipe has changed so many times over the last 40 years.
