I found this recipe in book "Everyday Life in Regency and Victorian England", From 1811-1901 by Kristine Hughes. This is an English recipe but I am sure it was a dish in America at this time too.

Oat Pudding

'Grease a pudding cloth. Take enough beef broth to moisten 2 cups of coarse ground oatmeal, add seasonings and stir well. Pack this loosely into the pudding bag and hang it in the pan beside the beef. The oatmeal will swell until it fills the cloth and should be served with the meat once a little broth has been spooned on top."
