I visited Oak Grove Cemetery in Americus today. My first time since I was in college there in the eighties. I visited the graves of locals like William and Peter Furlow of the 12th Georgia and those in the Confederate section with the graves of the Camp Sumter guards from the Ga. Reserves and the graves of those who died in the Americus hospital, including the 49 Unknowns.

One of the graves was marked

"C F C R
CONFEDERATE SOLDIER"

Does anyone know what this means?

I've never seen one like that but I think @RedRover might have it.

BTW, my mother taught school in Americus when she was very young and living in McRae.
Both sides of my family are from Telfair Co. (the county of which McRae is the county seat). Most of my CW ancestors were in Telfair Co. units (the 20th Ga. Inf., the 49th Ga. Inf., and the 7th Militia).

I visited McRae a number of times in my youth as a number of my mother's family lived there in the fifties (and my mother had lived there in the thirties). I have two cousins who still live there but I've not been in touch with them since the early 70s. As I understand it, times are tough for McRae now. Interesting that we share that small space.
