Nurses And Nuns

Hi!

My name is Aidan and I am costume designing a small film that takes place during the civil war. It's primarily in a southern medical tent and our ladies are dressing as nurses and nuns. Our director is interested in including a black nun, but I am having some difficulty researching whether that would be accurate.

We know that there were black nuns at the time and that there were black nurses that worked alongside white nurses. I also found out there was a sisterhood founded in New Orleans, but they weren't allowed to wear habits until some time later, when the papacy validated their sisterhood. I can't quite figure out when that was, so I am unsure if our nun should be in traditional habit dress.

But would they have traveled with the nurses to medical tents? And does anyone know anything about when they were allowed to wear habits? My director really wants our lady in a habit to hide the inaccuracy of her awesome hair, but I don't want it to be the thing that takes away from the accuracy of our film.

Does anyone have any input to this? Thanks very much. I've been lurking on these forums for a few weeks now without an account - there's been a lot of great resources here. Thank you.

Welcome and I don't have an answer for you but I appreciate you and your team's attention to accuracy, something a lot of the film industry seems to lack nowadays. Hope you can find an answer in the thread 7th Miss posted or elsewhere here
