When curiosity led me to look up the nurse in the ad below, the search took me down a series of rabbit holes. Her last name was spelled a number of different ways, but the photograph was always the same, ensuring I had the right woman. Maggie evidently ended up being the longest lived Union nurse, dying at age 100 in 1934.
She served for a period of time under Thomas Hannah, 95th Illinois Infantry, Ward Master at Adams General Hospital. He was a particularly caring man, which no doubt made him well suited to his hospital duties. His letters to Maggie and to his wife tell a story all by themselves. A portion of these letters can be found linked below.
H. B Martin of Pavillion, Wyoming remains elusive, as does his reason for wanting to contact Ms. "Mesnole."
