Visitors to Gettysburg National Military Park will have a rare opportunity to touch a piece of American history on Veterans Day, Monday, November 11. Original weapons used in the Civil War will be on display in the lobby of the Visitor Center from 10AM to 4PM.
The exhibit will display the most common weapons used in the Battle of Gettysburg, including muskets, rifles, rifle-muskets, carbines, revolvers, swords and sabres. Unlike most museum exhibits, however, this display will allow close examination of the artifacts and even light handling by visitors.
Knowledgeable living historians in period attire will explain the weapons and some of the new technology of the war, including breechloaders, the Maynard tape and pellet priming systems, and pinfire and rimfire cartridges. They will also tell the story of the little-known role of women and children in manufacturing ammunition and about the hundreds who died in accidents doing that dangerous work.
The exhibit will also include reproduction flags and information about the corps insignia system used by the Union Army for the first time at the Battle of Gettysburg.
This will also be a free admission day to the Museum and Cyclorama for veterans, active military, and Adams County residents.
This special exhibit is part of the educational outreach programming of the Civil War Dance Foundation. In addition to conducting Civil War balls, dance demonstrations and classes, the CWDF also presents military and civilian artifact displays and lectures on a variety of Civil War topics.
The Civil War Dance Foundation leads the dancing at the Civil War Preservation Ball and National Civil War Ball. These two balls have raised over $105,000 for Gettysburg National Military Park. The CWDF's other events have raised another $75,000 for other preservation causes. In 2011, the CWDF was named the Reenactment Unit of the Year by the Civil War Trust in recognition of its support of preservation projects.
